A 73-year-old man was airlifted to the hospital following a crash Thursday afternoon in Santa Maria.

It happened shortly before 12:30 p.m. on Highway 166 just west of Black Road.

The California Highway Patrol says, for an unknown reason, the elderly man turned his car in front of a catering truck and was struck by that vehicle.

He reportedly suffered major injuries and was taken to the hospital by helicopter.

The driver of the catering truck was not hurt.

The road was closed in the area for Calstar to land.

The crash remains under investigation.
