Peoples’ Self-Help Housing officially broke ground Wednesday on a new affordable housing project for seniors in Santa Maria.

Sierra Madre Cottages, located on East Camino Colegio near Miller School, will be comprised of 40 cottage-style homes.

There will be both one and two bedroom units available.

Bethel Church brought the land years ago and decided to allow Peoples’ Self-Help Housing to use the property to build.

The organization hopes the new development will provide housing for those who need a little help finding the right place.

“People talk about a senior tsunami. There’s a lot of seniors that spent their careers and find themselves at this point needing a little bit of help in their final years with affordable housing,” said John Fowler, Peoples’ Self-Help Housing CEO.

The project will cost $9 million.

Builders expect it will take about 18 months to complete construction.
