A Santa Maria man was struck and injured by a pickup on Tuesday morning along Highway 101.

According to the California Highway Patrol, dispatch received a report of a man walking along the center divider of Highway 101 just south of Main Street around 5:18 a.m.

Shortly before 6:40 a.m., dispatch received several more calls about a man walking along the southbound shoulder of Highway 101, just north of Stowell Road.

The report states the man, identified as 32-year-old George Whiting, then walked “directly into the path of traffic and was struck by a pickup” before officers arrived.

CHP units, passing motorists, and medical personnel arrived on scene to provide medical attention to Whiting.

He suffered a broken arm and abrasions to his head, CHP said. Whiting was flown to Cottage Hospital.

CHP said alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in the incident.

Whiting was reported as a missing person after walking away from the Del Mar Group Home in Orcutt on Monday.
