The Santa Maria planning commission has approved the request for a mixed-use project near the south end of the city’s Waller Park.

The project is reserved for a four-acre lot on the corner of Mercury Dr. and Auto Park Dr. It includes both residential and commercial properties as an extension of the nearby Skyway Center.

City officials envision that the new project will to create housing opportunities and retail options in the area. They also hope to add to the city environment by combining space for living and doing business.

“[It’s] a true mixed use experience because somebody can live in the apartments and can walk to the burger place or the Vietnamese restaurant or get their dog taken care of,” said Chuen Ng, director of community development for the city.

The development consists of four-story buildings and will include 44 residential studios, 77 one-bedroom and 22 two-bedroom apartments and 24 three-bedroom units.

The project still needs to be approved by the city council before it moves forward.
