Officials broke ground Friday on a new 28,000-square-foot Community Health Center (CHC) facility in Lompoc.

The new “super center” at 1200 Ocean Ave. will replace CHC’s existing facility at 425 Central Ave.

UnitedHealthcare has given $9.1 million for the more than $15 million project it says will “help construct a health center that will help increase access to care and help improve health outcomes for underserved communities in Lompoc.”

There will be 50 medical rooms at the facility, which will include immediate care, primary care, pediatrics, women’s health, dental, behavioral health, chiropractic and specialty services.

There will also be a solar roofing system and electric vehicle charging stations on site.

The City Council approved the project last year but not without some negotiating.

After going back and forth over how much CHC would pay the city, both sides agreed to annual payments of $15,000 for city services when the project is completed with an increase of 2 percent each year.

CHC has several locations on the Central Coast from San Miguel to Lompoc.
