Pile burning scheduled in Vandenberg Village area this week

Smoke may be visible in the Vandenberg Village area outside of Lompoc this week.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department will be conducting three pile burns scheduled to take place Tuesday through Friday from about 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The burn plots are located west of Rucker Road and east of the East Mesa Oaks subdivision, north of Galaxy Way and on Titan Avenue between Oakhill Drive and Northoaks Drive.

“This pile burning operation is the most efficient way to eliminate biomass created as the result identified defensible space treatments. The treatment and elimination of cuttings will help to safeguard the surrounding community in the event of wildfire,” officials said in a press release.

Santa Barbara County Fire is working with the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District and the California Air Resources Board to help minimize air quality impacts from smoke in surrounding communities.

Fire officials say other burns will take place through June 1.
