1 person arrested in Santa Maria DUI checkpoint

The Santa Maria Police Department arrested one driver at a DUI checkpoint Friday night for alcohol and or drugs.

Police said 395 cars were screened at the checkpoint at 1400 S. Broadway between 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. Friday.

They said no other drivers were arrested and only three citations were given out.

Santa Maria police said drivers caught driving while impaired and charged with a DUI can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to be $13,500. The police department is reminding drivers that “DUI doesn’t just mean booze,” prescription drugs and marijuana can also be impairing.

The Santa Maria Police Department will be conducting another DUI checkpoint on March 22.
