A man believed to have been trying to break into a Los Osos home early Friday morning is in the hospital after being shot by a CMC officer Friday morning, officials say.

It happened at about 2:45 a.m. Friday on the 1300 block of 6th Street.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office says it appears a man tried to break into the home and was shot by a resident inside.

The suspect was found shot outside the home when deputies arrived. The resident was not injured.

The California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo confirms the resident is an officer with 25 years in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation who has spent the last 11 years working at CMC. His name has not been released.

Detectives are still working to collect evidence and interview witnesses.

As of 11:30 a.m., forensic investigators were on scene and crime scene tape remained up outside the home.

The condition of the man who was shot was not immediately known.
