Progress is being made to reopen a portion of Highway 154 in Santa Barbara County closed since a storm at the beginning of the month blocked a culvert, causing water to flow over the highway.

Caltrans says crews are working 24/7 and expect to re-open the road in a matter of weeks, not months.

The closure extends from the Lake Cachuma State Recreation Area to Paradise Road.

Crews are working to clear the culvert’s opening, located about 40 feet below the surface. It’s clogged with water and debris.

Pumps and cameras are being used to help open up the culvert.

Lake Cachuma is accessible on the Santa Ynez side of Highway 154 and businesses along the highway remain open.

Highway 101 is a detour.

Caltrans says it expects to release more information on Friday.
