A ceramic mural created by a retired fine arts professor was unveiled at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria on Tuesday.

Former professor Bob Nichols created the piece called “About This Life: Signs, Symbols, & Metaphor.”

The mural is a combination of things that symbolize his travels throughout the years. From photos of birds to rock formations.

Nichols says the work refers to a book by one of his favorite authors and the experiences he’s gone through during his lifetime.

“The phenomena of space that we walk through and live in and move from place to place is activated by art by physical representation, by sculptures. It changes the environment. It changes the experience of the environment,” Nichols said.

This is the first mural Nichols has created on the college’s campus.

He taught ceramics there for 28 years.
