The Cal Poly San Luis Obispo chapter of the Sigma Pi fraternity has been suspended over alleged hazing violations, as well as several other violations.

According to the university’s website, the suspension is for “violation of registered student organization code of conduct, violation of health and safety, violation of alcohol use, violations of law, violation of hazing and conspiracy to haze.”

A Cal Poly spokesperson says the fraternity was investigated and sanctioned after the university received reports that the fraternity was involved in hazing in fall of 2018.

The university says “actions included the humiliation of its pledges, causing mental and emotional distress.”

The university says the chapter was also providing alcohol during its recruitment and pledging process, and in some cases, minors had access to alcohol.

The suspension will be in effect until June 15, 2019. The fraternity will then be on social probation through Spring 2020.
