Caltrans announced Friday afternoon that it may shut down Highway 1 in the Mud Creek and Paul’s Slide areas of Big Sur on Sunday because of a significant storm in the forecast.

The advisory is part of Caltrans’ storm plan formulated after the Mud Creek area was reopened last July. The 1/4-mile section of Highway 1 north of Ragged Point had been closed for more than a year due to a massive landslide.

Gates on both sides of Mud Creek and Paul’s Slide have since been installed and when a significant storm is expected, Caltrans can close the gates as a safety precaution. The highway would be reopened after the storm, once engineers and maintenance crews have a chance to inspect the area for any damage and remove any debris that’s fallen onto the highway.

Caltrans will send out an updated traffic advisory either confirming the closure or providing additional information in 24 hours.
