California State Parks officials said a shark bit a surfer off Sandspit Beach at Montaña de Oro State Park on Tuesday.

It reportedly happened at about 10 a.m., approximately 100 yards offshore.

State Parks says the surfer suffered a bite to his lower extremities but was able to swim ashore and get to a local hospital on his own.

Brian Hoagge told KSBY he was surfing at Sandspit at the same time.

“I heard some guys yelling and saw a few guys paddle in that direction,” he said. “Next thing I know is, they were all yelling to get out of the water and yelling ‘shark.'”

State Parks was notified of the incident later in the afternoon and is working to gather more information.
