The San Luis Obispo Police Department is starting a new camera registration to ease the stress of registering home surveillance technology through the department.
The online tool will allow San Luis Obispo residents the opportunity to register their home cameras, video doorbells and any other video capture devices with police.
Registering cameras with the Police Department will allow them to build a database of exterior camera locations throughout the city. Police will not have direct access to home cameras, but will just alert the department of the camera’s use.
The registration also lets the department locate any video evidence, and contact the owner of the camera directly without giving up any rights of privacy.
The Santa Maria Police Department began utilizing this type of registration program a few months ago.
If anyone wants to register their home surveillance devices with police, the registration form can be found on the San Luis Obispo Police Department website.
