UPDATE (11:50 a.m.) – According to police, gas company workers estimate the intersection of Orcutt and Johnson will be closed for approximately three hours.

(11:16 a.m.) – A gas leak prompted evacuations and shut down a San Luis Obispo intersection Friday morning.

According to San Luis Obispo police, the “fairly significant leak” was reported at about 10:35 a.m.

Crews working in the area of Orcutt and Johnson reportedly hit a gas line.

That intersection was shut down and due to the direction of the wind, two homes in the area were evacuated, according to police, who say people in eight other nearby homes were told to shelter in place.

Firefighters responded to the scene to help assess the situation while emergency crews wait for someone from the gas company to arrive.

No other information was immediately available.
