New upgrades will soon be coming to the streets of Santa Maria after the Planning Committee approved the “streetscape” plan to accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists.

After working on creating the plan for the past two years, it will focus mainly on a redesign of Main Street between Pine and Miller streets. It will also change up Broadway in between Cook and Mill streets.

The plan will create protected bike lanes, on-street parking and larger sidewalks to keep pedestrians and cyclists safe from traffic.

The Planning Commission passed the project with a 4-0 vote.

The plan will go to the City Council next, where they will consider it during a meeting on January 15.
