UCSB and CHP team up to give away bike lights to promote safety

Posted

UCSB Associated Students Bike Committee and CHP are working together to promote bike safety by giving away free bike lights for students who need the extra nighttime protection.

The CHP receives several calls a year in response to traffic collisions regarding bicyclists and started addressing the local ongoing bike safety concerns with UCSB faculty, student leaders, Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Injury Prevention Unit, Santa Barbara Sheriff Department and the University of California Police Department.

One of the major concerns was that bicyclists were riding in the dark evening hours without the required lighting needed for drivers to see on the road, so the UCSB Associated Students Bike Committee collected about 800 removable bike lights that easily mount on handlebars.

The CHP also pitched into the efforts by donating an additional 1,020 bike lights to the drive.

The organizations will host a bike light giveaway at 6550 Pardall Road on the Isla Vista college campus Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. or until supplies run out.

The event will also feature information about bike safety from CHP and helmet giveaways as well.
