Dispatch services for the Five Cities Fire Authority are changing.

Starting Thursday, the department is transitioning to county services.

Previously, Five Cities Fire relied on the Grover Beach Police Department for its dispatch services. Firefighters say they’re grateful for the police department’s help but the change will help them expand their capabilities.

They’ll now be able to operate 24-hours a day, have a captain to supervise dispatch, use GPS to better assign crews to fires, and coordinate with the county more easily.

Funding for the switch is included in the current budget.
