Veterans made their way home Wednesday night after a two-day trip to Washington, D.C. in their honor.

The trip was made possible thanks to Honor Flight Central Coast.

The organization seeks to honor America’s veterans by taking them to D.C. where they can view the national memorials dedicated to the wars they served in.

Loved ones and community members lined up inside San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport Wednesday night to give the veterans a hero’s welcome.

The veterans left Monday for their “Tour of Honor.” Along the way, people greeted them at the airports and memorials and thanked them for their service.

The trip is free to all veterans, thanks to the organization. Honor Flight is entirely volunteer based.

Honor Flight Central Coast usually takes three trips a year. The next trip is scheduled for May 6, 2019.

According to the organization’s website, more than 80 local veterans are still waiting to go on their Tour of Honor. Organizers say time is not on their side for World War II or Korean War veterans.
