Jury selection is underway in the Jonathan Highley murder trial.

The 36-year-old is charged with murder and special firearms allegations for the March 2017 shooting death of Tony San Juan, 43, in the back parking lot of Elmer’s Bar in Old Orcutt.

Highley and his wife, Mayra Perez, were arrested hours after the killing of the Santa Maria husband and father of two.

Perez pleaded no contest to being an accessory to murder after the fact and aiding and abetting and was sentencing last August to a year in jail, with credit for time served.

Highley remains in custody at Santa Barbara County Jail.

Opening statements will begin in the trial once jury selection is complete.
