The Department of Rehabilitation and its community partners hosted the Disability Employment Awards breakfast Thursday morning in San Luis Obispo.

Businesses and their employees were welcomed to enjoy an early morning meal to honor those in the community that bring on people with disabilities to their employment teams.

Matt DeWolf, store manager at Smart and Final in Arroyo Grande, had nothing but kind words to say about the program that brings together hard-working employees with open work environments. DeWolf’s lead service clerk, Robby Soley, has taught him a lot about what it means to be a manager, as well as life lessons he will take with him for the future.

“By taking Robby on board, how much I’ve learned about myself—patience, learning for everybody. Like you, me, myself, Robby, we all just want a sense of purpose and that’s really what we afford to Robby. We give him a purpose with a little bit of hard work and it turns out to be beneficial for both of us,” said DeWolf.

October marks National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the hiring and working with people of all types of disabilities.
