The trial for Paul and Ruben Flores, who are charged in connection with the 1996 murder of Kristin Smart, is scheduled to start next month.

During a virtual San Luis Obispo County Superior Court hearing Monday morning, Paul waived time for 60 days and a May 31 trial date was set.

All parties will come back before the judge April 20 for an in-person hearing where the jury trial location is expected to be decided.

This follows San Luis Obispo County Superior Court Judge Craig van Rooyen’s ruling last week that the father and son duo would likely not receive a fair and impartial trial in San Luis Obispo County where Paul was a person-of-interest in connection with Smart’s disappearance for more than 20 years before his arrest in April of 2021.

It has not been announced what counties may be considered for the trial.

Smart was last seen walking back to the dorms with Paul Flores after an off-campus party on the early morning of May 25, 1996. While her body has never been found, Smart was declared legally dead on May 25, 2002.
