UPDATE (12 p.m.) – Forward progress of the grass fire that broke out Wednesday morning near New Cuyama has been stopped, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, which assisted with the fire response.
The fire burned an estimated 5-7 acres.
UPDATE (8:49 a.m.) – CAL FIRE reports the fire is approximately five acres in size and is not affecting the highway.
ORIGINAL STORY: Firefighters were responding to reports of a fire in the New Cuyama area Wednesday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, it sparked around 8:23 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Highway 166 just east of Spanish Ranch.
Initial reports were that flames were very close to the road.
No other information was immediately available.
