California's governor reached out to retired doctors and medical and nursing students to help treat an anticipated surge of coronavirus patients.

He is asking healthcare professionals to sign up for the California Health Corps at healthcorps.ca.gov. Those who register will be paid and given malpractice insurance coverage.

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday signed an order waiving certain professional licensing and certification requirements to allow health care facilities to staff at least an additional 50,000 hospital beds.

In the last four days, hospitalizations of coronavirus patients in California have doubled, and the number of patients in intensive care has tripled.

At midday, the state had more than 6,300 reported cases and 132 deaths.
