SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - More people are leaving California than moving in.
New estimates released Friday put the state's population at 39.96 million.
That's just shy of the 40 million milestone demographers had predicted the state would have passed by now.
The report shows California added more than 180,000 people when accounting for births and deaths over the 12 month period ending July 1. But California lost 39,500 people when you add up everyone who moved in and out of the state.
State officials say it is the first time since 2010 that more people left the state than moved in.
