SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Some lawmakers and mayors expressed skepticism over California Gov. Gavin Newsom's proposal to give $750 million to state-selected regional administrators to address the state's growing homelessness crisis.
Assembly budget chair Phil Ting said at a hearing Thursday that he needs more specifics about the governor's plan to create what Ting calls another layer of bureaucracy.
Cities, counties and other local entities have traditionally delivered the bulk of services to the homeless and the mayors of Oakland and San Jose testified they need both money and flexibility.
The $750 million proposed by Newsom could go toward rent vouchers, legal support and mediation services.
