A very large tortoise was spotted on the run on Sunday night in Santa Ynez, but before it could make a getaway (or get hurt), California Highway Patrol and a local rescue found its owners and delivered it safely home.

CHP Buellton says officers received a call about the large tortoise on the side on the road in the 1600 block of Edison Street around 5:50 p.m.

Before officers could arrive, the wayward tortoise had been safely picked up by the Santa Ynez Animal Rescue.

The owners of the runaway tortoise were found about two hours later. CHP Officers Brooks and Serleth delivered the wayward animal home and posted about the adventure on social media, officials said.

That tortoise certainly has a story to share with its buddies!

No official word if the tortoise will face any charges.
