The California Highway Patrol is investigating a crash in Isla Vista that left one person injured and a building severely damaged Friday night.

CHP says the driver of a 2006 Nissan Altima accelerated backward, hit a pedestrian and three parked vehicles in the parking lot of the 6700 block of Del Playa Drive.

After that, the driver accelerated forward and hit a building, which caused the natural gas line to rupture and significant structural damage.

The driver backed up, spun around and then hit a fourth parked vehicle.

The motorist fled the scene and abandoned their car in the 700 block of Camino Pescadero in Isla Vista and then fled on foot in an unknown direction.

The County of Santa Barbara Planning and Development Department building inspector red-tagged the structure, which was determined unsafe due to the amount of damage.

The pedestrian was treated at the scene for her injuries.

The name of the driver is being withheld. CHP says alcohol is a possible factor.

This is a preliminary assessment. The investigation is still ongoing.
