CHP: Bicyclist hit, killed by driver in Santa Barbara

UPDATE (1 p.m.): CHP says the driver of a 2003 Ford Explorer was driving west on Modoc Rd., west of Encore Dr. and did not see a bicyclist riding in the same direction.

The 48-year-old female driver struck the 54-year-old male bicyclist, ejecting the rider onto the road.

Santa Barbara County Fire and AMR Ambulance responded to the scene. First responders performed live saving measures on the bicyclist, but he succumbed to his injuries.

According to the report, the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet or any lighting devices or reflectors and was riding outside the bicycle lane.

Following an evaluation by a CHP officer, the female driver of the car was found not to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

It is unknown at this time if the bicyclist was under the influence.

The driver and three passengers in the vehicle did not sustain any injuries.

Modoc Road and surrounding roadways have opened back up after being closed for several hours.

The name of the deceased bicyclist is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

This is still an on-going investigation.


The California Highway Patrol is investigating after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a driver overnight in Santa Barbara.

According to the CHP incident page, the crash was reported at 12:40 a.m. Friday.

Officers say it happened at Modoc Rd. and Encore Dr.

Officers were on scene for several hours following the crash but have released few details at this point.
