A Sacramento police officer was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon while responding to a domestic disturbance call.

Officer Tara O’Sullivan, 26, was shot by a man with a rifle and later died at the hospital.

Officer O’Sullivan was helping a woman get her belongings and leave the home, police said.

Police remained on the scene Thursday morning where the gunman barricaded himself inside.

During the standoff, the man fired at officers several times as they tried to reach O’Sullivan. The officers fired back.

“She gave her young life while protecting our community,” said Deputy Police Chief Dave Polletta with the Sacramento Police Dept.

The deputy chief says the suspect hasn’t been identified yet.
