Community members are coming together to solve the local childcare challenge.

A town hall meeting took place Wednesday in San Luis Obispo to highlight the urgency of early child care and education issues in San Luis Obispo County.

Advocates believe there is a lack of affordability for families, and there is a persistent workforce crisis in the early childhood education field.

“If we don’t have a community that provides accessible, affordable childcare for working parents, then that puts a squeeze on our entire community, on our economy, and its ability to hire good workers and its ability to provide an opportunity for people to both work and be good employees as well as be at home and be good parents,” said Wendy Wendt, Executive Director of First Five SLO County.

Participants say Wednesday’s meeting was the first step in creating an action plan for solutions within the community.
