Santa Maria Police Detectives are investigating an Uber driver who was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a passenger.

Police say the victim told detectives that she had an Uber driver pick her up and drive her to a confidential location in Santa Maria. After the transportation was complete, the victim said the driver took her to another location where he sexually assaulted her.

Police say Shadi Aziz Abdul, 37, of Santa Maria is in custody after the Santa Maria Police department put out a warrant for his arrest and was later arrested at the U.S/Mexico border in San Diego.

According to a press release, Abdul was brought to Santa Maria on Monday and booked into the Santa Barbara County jail.

Police are releasing little information at this time, but say it is possible other people could have been victimized.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Santa Maria Police at 805-928-3781.
