An Atascadero man was convicted this week of sexually assaulting a woman in a secluded parking area at Atascadero Lake Park.

The crime happened in June of 2017, after David E. Ardebili, 40, enticed the severely intoxicated victim to enter his vehicle before sexually assaulting her.

He then left the victim, who he didn’t know, at the Kmart parking lot in Atascadero.

On Friday, San Luis Obispo County District Attorney Dan Dow announced that a jury found Ardebili guilty of attempted sexual penetration of an intoxicated victim, which is a felony, as well as misdemeanor simple assault.

Investigators say the victim had separated from friends and family in downtown San Luis Obispo while visiting from out of the area.

Evidence indicated that Ardebili had seen her walking alone and eventually drove her to a secluded parking area at the Atascadero Lake Park.

Closing statements in the case were delivered on Thursday.

The jury began deliberating in the late afternoon and returned Friday with their verdicts.

Ardebili is scheduled to be sentenced on June 17.
