Lompoc police are clarifying some confusion over reports of a child abduction at a local elementary school.

Social media posts Thursday indicated a child had been abducted at La Cañada Elementary School, however, police say it was not an abduction.

Police say a five-year-old child somehow ended up walking off campus with another parent around 2:40 p.m. Thursday. Officers say that parent then walked the child across the street.

At some point, police say the child wandered off and went up to a car that he thought he recognized. The child realized it wasn’t his mother in the car and continued walking.

Officers say the child eventually ended up walking with an unidentified man.

Police contacted the two near Highway 1 Liquor on H Street.

They determined the man had not committed a crime.

Officers don’t anticipate any charges to be filed in the case at this time.
