Cal Poly will host its annual student-led “Take Back the Night” rally Thursday night in honor of local sexual assault survivors.
Survivors are encouraged to attend and meet others who have been impacted by sexual violence to build a network of support. Organizers hope to raise awareness of the resources available on campus for students.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Thursday’s rally is the culmination of events hosted by the school’s Safer program, which provides confidential resources for addressing sexual assault and other sensitive issues.
The rally kicks off at 5:30 p.m. with live music, student speakers and a variety of performances in Mission Plaza. San Luis Obispo mayor Heidi Harmon will lead a candlelight vigil to pay respects to those who have died as the result of sexual and gender-based violence.
The event will conclude with a march through downtown San Luis Obispo, ending at about 8:30 p.m.
