Report examines issues Santa Maria faces as population grows

CAUSE and a number of other organizations are looking toward the future of Santa Maria and the issues the city could face as it grows.

A community planning and policy report was released Thursday to look into topics including housing, transportation, and economic development for the city’s future.

This is the first time in 20 years that the Santa Maria General Plan has been completely updated.

CAUSE surveys residents and then provides the information to city officials and planners.

“They come to us to kind of get information from the hard to reach community members. So they really are working hard to make sure our community is involved,” said Abraham Melendrez, CAUSE Community Organizer.

The report recommends a number of plans, including building more housing, increasing public transit, revitalizing the downtown area, and expanding access to public education.
