This month, mayors across the nation are asking people to make a long-term commitment to managing their water use.

It’s part of the 2019 National Mayor’s Challenge.

In Santa Maria, city leaders held a community event Wednesday and encouraged locals to make water conservation pledges on behalf of their city.

The cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge could win $3,000 toward home utilities, a Toyota Highlander Hybrid for a deserving local charity, and hundreds of other eco-friendly prizes.

“It’s always nice to just have those challenges so that people are aware and they continue to be aware and make other people aware at the same time,” said Santa Maria Mayor Alice Patino.

This is the 8th year for the challenge, which is presented in part by the Wyland Foundation, Toyota, and The Toro Company.

Organizers say more than $50,000 in prizes were awarded to nearly 300 people across the country last year.
