One person is in custody after a carjacking in Pismo Beach.

Police officers were called to the 600 block of Five Cities Drive just before 8 a.m. Thursday for reports of a carjacking.

Officers say the carjacker got into the car through an unlocked passenger door and then forced the driver out of the vehicle before driving away and onto Highway 101.

CHP officers later located the vehicle traveling southbound on 101 near Betteravia in Santa Maria.

CHP officers tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver led them on a short chase. Officers eventually stopped chasing the vehicle because it was a public safety concern.

Shortly after, the vehicle and suspect were located near Stillwell Road and Ashbrook Lane in Orcutt.

Police identified the suspect as Samuel Nicholas Carlos Giovanni, 30, of Grover Beach.

He was taken into custody without incident.

No one was injured, and the vehicle was returned to the owner.

Giovanni was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail.
