The Winter Bird Festival kicked off in Morro Bay Friday.

Visitors arrived from across the world, some coming from as far as Germany, to see rare birds migrate through the Central Coast.

Organizers said Morro Bay is one of the best areas in the United States to view birds in January because so many rare species come through that are not native to the Central Coast.

More than 200 specials are typically sighted during the festival weekend.

“It is one of the biggest birding areas in the United States and people come from all over the world just to see birds that come from Morro Bay in the winter,” said coordinator Kelly Vandenheuvel.

The festival lasts through January 21.
