Police: Man arrested after crashing into a car, hitting two people

The Santa Barbara Police Department arrested a Santa Barbara man who officers say crashed into a car and hit a woman and a child on the sidewalk while attempting to escape police.

According to police, they tried to serve a search warrant and felony arrest warrant for Ricardo Sanchez, 36, at noon Thursday on the 200 block of West Micheltorena St.

Police said when Sanchez saw police he got into a car and tried to escape, ramming into a police car and trying to hit a detective who was on foot.

Detectives followed with lights and sirens, but say he wouldn’t stop.

Officers say Sanchez ran a red light at the intersection of Victoria St. and Santa Barbara St. while fleeing.

Police say when he ran the light, he hit a car on Santa Barbara St., but they say he continued driving on the sidewalk and hit a woman and a child who were both injured.

After crashing into a car and hitting two people, police said Sanchez left his car and ran towards the 1300 block of Garden St. Police said he tried to hide in an apartment complex but police ultimately arrested him without further incident.

Police arrested Sanchez for:

  • Attempted murder of a police officer
  • Assault with a deadly weapon on an officer
  • Possession of a controlled substance for sale
  • Reckless driving causing great bodily injury
  • Felon in possession of ammunition
  • Felon in possession of pepper spray
  • Felony hit and run with injury
  • Felony vandalism and potentially other charges because the investigation is ongoing.
