A lucky person in New York starts the new year off with a winning ticket that matched all the numbers in the New Year’s Day Mega Millions jackpot.
Lottery officials say the ticket sold at a store in Long Island, New York. The ticket matched all the numbers to win the $425 million Mega Millions Jackpot. Mega Millions says that the cash option for this jackpot would be $254.6 million.
The winning numbers for the New Year’s Day drawing were 57, 70, 34, 62, 44, and a gold Mega Ball of 14.
The New Year’s Day Jackpot is the eighth largest in history, after the Dec. 28 drawing had no big winners.
The last time someone hit the jackpot was in October when a single ticket in South Carolina brought in $1.537 billion. That was the biggest lottery prize in history. The winner of that jackpot has not come forward. During that same drawing, a $1 million ticket was sold in San Luis Obispo.
This is the fifth time the jackpot has been drawn on New Year’s Day. The only other winner in the New Year’s drawing was in 2008.
