Larger waves have been spotted off the coast of Morro Bay.

The swell in Morro Bay was approximately 15-20 feet midday Thursday, which is extremely dangerous. The Morro Bay Harbor Patrol has listed the beach as “hazardous.”

Some harbor patrol officers say this seems like one of the biggest storms they’ve seen in years.

Many visitors came to the beach to see the larger waves, though authorities warn not to get too close.

“Some of the visitors want to get a close look at the waves that are happening right now at the entrance breaking over because it’s spectacular,” said Morro Bay Harbor Patrol Officer Scott Mather, “however, it’s inherently dangerous.”

Longtime residents were also trying to tell visitors to watch out near the water.

“Give it the respect it deserves because it’s more powerful than people realize,” said Dan Hack, a Los Osos resident and surfer.
