Caltrans is closing Highway 1 at two points in Big Sur starting at noon on Wednesday until further notice.

The road will be closed at Paul’s Slide and at Mud Creek as rain is forecast to continue. Gates on either side will be locked.

Caltrans hopes to inspect and clean up damage on Friday morning after the storm and reopen the highway as soon as possible.

Drivers will still be able to travel in between the closures if they are already in Big Sur. Nacimiento-Fergusson Road will remain open to vehicles under 12 feet tall.

The section of Highway 1 in Big Sur is prone to landslides. The road fully reopened in July 2018 after a large landslide at Mud Creek forced a closure that lasted more than a year.
