The San Luis Obispo City Council approved adding more affordable housing units during a City Council meeting Tuesday.

The original plan was to build a commercial building next to the existing apartments on Broad Street, but planners say demand for housing was so high, they decided to make the commercial building smaller and add a few additional market rate units to the project.

Construction is set to start in 90 days.

San Luis Obispo Mayor Heidi Harmon says affordable housing is a top priority going forward.

Construction on another complex on Violet Street is set to start this week.
