Repairs to the retaining wall at Paul’s Slide in Big Sur are complete.

Caltrans announced it finished construction on the existing retaining wall Monday morning. Crews closed Highway 1 for one night, instead of two as they had previously anticipated. The highway was closed from 10 p.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Monday. The closure that was scheduled for Monday night will no longer be needed.

Paul’s Slide was damaged during a storm in January of 2017. Part of the embankment was lost, including the southbound lane. A section of Highway 1 was closed for several months while crews made repairs.

Caltrans says the landslide area is still active, so they’re monitoring conditions to make sure it’s safe for drivers. It has been operating under a temporary traffic signal for more than a year, and that signal will remain in place.

Caltrans says construction work on the retaining wall at Paul’s Slide will make it a safer drive. John Madonna Construction of San Luis Obispo is the contractor for the project.
