Monterey Road Elementary School in Atascadero received national recognition this week as a Green Ribbon school during a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
46 other schools from across the country were honored at the event. They were recognized for efforts to go green by reducing environmental impacts and cost, promoting better health, and promoting environmental education.
The honorees were named from a pool of candidates nominated by 25 states and the Department of Defense Department of Education Activity. 40 public schools and six non-public schools were selected for the honor.
Monterey Road Elementary’s green initiative has been in the works for several years. The school teamed up with Cuesta Community College Sustainability Resource Center back in 2015. Teachers and students learned about sustainability and recycling. Student volunteers even ended up running compost stations at lunch, which was then used in the school garden.
