A man charged with stalking was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in state prison.

Michael Sidney Smith, 50, pleaded guilty in San Luis Obispo Superior Court to making criminal threats and stalking with a prior conviction for criminal threats.

According to the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office, Smith’s crimes occurred in the spring and summer of 2016 when he followed his victim in spite of a criminal protective order against him and used social media to threaten the victim’s life. At the time, Smith was on parole for a domestic violence conviction involving the same person.

The case was investigated by the San Luis Obispo Police Department.
