Police say six people are dead, including a gunman, after a string of shootings in Southeast Bakersfield.
According to NBC Affiliate KGET, there are five crime scenes and dozens of witnesses.
The Kern County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference Wednesday night and said the investigation is ongoing, but investigators are confident the shootings are connected.
The violence started around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Sheriff’s deputies say a husband and wife went to a business, and the husband shot and killed his wife, as well as a man inside the business. According to KGET, a third person walked into the business afterwards, and more shots were fired. Deputies say the gunman chased that third person to another location, where he shot and killed him.
Investigators say the gunman later drove to a home, where he killed two other people. They say he eventually hijacked a car from a woman and child. The Associated Press says the gunman took his own life as a sheriff’s deputy got close.
According to the AP, there is no word on how the other victims were related.
The Sheriff’s Office is expected to provide more information on Thursday.
