Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Campus Dining is switching to paper straws this school year.
Cal Poly has a goal of diverting 80 percent of its consumer waste away from landfills by 2020. University officials say the paper straws are fully compostable and decompose in 30 to 60 days.
The university will reportedly partner with San Luis Paper to provide the straws.
Cal Poly says students, faculty, staff, and visitors currently use nearly 1 million straws each year.
In March, an ordinance went into effect in San Luis Obispo making plastic straws available only upon request.
