Arroyo Grande is moving forward with plans to fill the empty Kmart building.
On Tuesday night, the Arroyo Grande City Council approved a motion to fill the building with three businesses. There will be some modifications.
The Kmart building has been vacant since April. It was one of 64 closures the company announced during the spring. Now, city leaders want to build a 24-hour gym, retail store, and grocery store in the 82,000 square foot building.
Community members attended the meeting Tuesday night. Some opposed a 50-foot sign that would be built with the development. They worry it will be an eyesore for people nearby.
After public comment, the city decided to push the decision on the sign back to a later date. When the city does discuss the plan again, anyone who lives within 300 feet of the sign would have to be notified and given an opportunity to give input.
